Topic of the day: should fanfic writers do basic research to make their (canon-compliant, non-AU) stories more believable in the universes they& #39;re set in?

[1/?]
For example, if the fanfic writer mentions a game the characters are playing or a food they& #39;re eating, should they confirm that said food or game is a thing in the geographic area where the characters are?

[2/?]
(This is brought to you by Americans living in NY playing the London version of Monopoly and eating Weetabix. Basic things that can be confirmed easily.)
[3/?]
Details like this take me out of the story and can be confirmed with a quick Google before posting. I& #39;m not asking fanfic writers to do hours of deep research but a quick confirmation of regional differences.
I ranted about this with people from another fandom, and was told that fanfic writers don& #39;t owe anyone research because they& #39;re doing this for free, and there& #39;s room on the internet for anyone to post anything they want.

[5/?]
Which is technically correct, there is room for any stories, good or not, and it is up to the reader to move on/stop reading, BUT.

Those little details are what make the stories GOOD.

And if I& #39;m "shaming" writers into thinking they can& #39;t post until they do XYZ, #SorryNotSorry.
So. What are your thoughts? Should fanfic writers go the extra [necessary IMO] step to make their stories better, or is it up to the reader to decide what they will or won& #39;t read?
