"inde consilium mihi pauca de Augusto et extrema tradere, mox Tiberii principatum et cetera, sine ira et studio, quorum causas procul habeo."

Tacitus, Annals 1.1.3
'Hence my intention is to pass down a mere few things about Augustus and of his final period; then about Tiberius' principate and the rest of them - needless to say without anger or partiality, any causes for which I keep at a distance.'
Probably one of the most famous of Tacitus' claims, that he intends to write history "sine ira et studio", which - along with a summary of the content of his 'Annals' - serves rather as his Preface.
The Image at the head of this thread is the famous Meroë Head of Augustus, ca. 25 BC, which was taken as plunder by Queen Amanirenas of Kush and dedicated at the threshold of the the Kushite Temple of Victory (British Museum: 1911,0901.1).
