When I was 17 and sexually assaulted, I was prescribed SSRIs and “case closed,” because my grades didn’t drop. Meds can be/are an important part of mental healthcare, but are too often used alone as a “quick fix” to manage symptoms, often at the cost of youth’s longterm health. https://twitter.com/TorontoStar/status/1386648833044713474
there is literally no reason healthcare coverage shouldn’t include psychotherapy and counselling. Aside from it being common sense, it would also cost less overall in the long run by reducing the number of people who require in- and out-patient care after self harm.
I could go on about this forever but I'll leave it at: post-covid, many people are going to need care and support, we won't be able to medicate ourselves out of this mental healthcare crisis.
