Different types of job opportunities / companies to work in as a developer, and the pros / cons of each:

1. "Traditional" companies.
Almost every company needs some form of digital platform or solution. Companies like banks, insurance, etc. almost always have an IT department, and the culture is generally more chill. Great opportunity to learn if you have senior mentors.
2. "Big Tech" companies.
Companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon etc. obviously have a HUGE focus on development. These companies pay extremely well and offer great learning opportunities, but they can also be very cut-throat and stressful. So it's up to your personal preference.
3. Agencies.
One of my personal favourites (and where I'm currently employed) is a digital agency. We have many different projects with different clients. It's a fast moving environment excellent for learning, but also very budget focused and often require shortcuts/compromises.
4. Startups.
A startup is usually focused on a brand new idea/product. You'll wear many hats and do lots of interesting work, but you're also at the risk of the idea/funding not working out. And as maybe the only technical person, there might not be mentors to learn from.
5. SaaS companies.
Software as a Service companies specialize in one/a few digital products or services, usually with users paying monthly. They can be quite similar to a startup, but can also have a few more years of operations, making them more secure to work at.
6. Freelancing.
As a freelancer, you'll be working directly with clients, usually on a per-project basis. Freelancing offers great flexibility and pay, but you'll also have to do all the work of finding new clients, managing the business side etc. There's also some inherent risk
