USING NUMBERS IN ENGLISH WRITING
A thread.

Numbers are common elements of many writings. However, there are two basic formats for using them properly.

1. Spelling them out - fifty
2. Using the numerals - 50

When do you (1) and when do you (2)?

SPELLING YOUR NUMBERS OUT

1. When the number is below 10.
"I have TWO oranges."
"He will serve for two years before taking a seven months leave."

2. When the number is starting a sentence.
"NINETY years ago..."

Not... "60 years ago..."

"Twenty persons liked my thread."
USING THE NUMERALS

1. When the number is 10 & above.
"I am 17 years old."

"He played the entire 90 minutes without a shot on target."

2. When you're you're writing a mixed fraction.
"2⅓"

3. When you're writing the days of the month.
"26th April 2021"
4. When writing decimals.
0.98

5. When writing percentages.
90%

BREAK NOTE!

1. Spell out fractions BUT always use an hyphen.
"One-fourth"
Don't spell mixed fractions.

2. Spell out combined numbers BUT with hyphen too.

"Forty-five bodies were found at the accident scene."
SPECIAL NOTES!

1. WHEN WRITING CURRENCIES

-Place the currency sign in front of the figure.
N40 $30

-Don't use signs and spellings together.
$60 dollars. Wrong! $60 or 60 dollars.

-Separate thousands with comma, and decimal with period.
N10,000 or N200.906
-Unless you're writing a check, no need for multiple zeros.

One million euros is better than €1,000,000.
However, if there are other figures other than just zeros, you can write.

N1,900,965 is better then one million, nine hundred thousand, nine hundred and sixty-five naira.
2. WRITING TIME

-Use a.m and p.m with numerals only. You can use it to write time fractions too.
2 p.m, not two p.m
1:30 a.m

-Use o'clock when you're writing a whole time.
2 o'clock, not 2:45 o'clock.

-Midnight and Noon are absolutes.

Nothing like "12 o'clock midnight."
"I prayed from midnight until noon."

Not... "I prayed from 12 o'clock midnight until 12 o'clock noon."

Instead write, "I slept from 12:00 a.m to 12:00 pm."

You're lazy sha 😂 😂

I did not add 😂 😂 😂

Sometimes, you'll need to write two numbers sequentially that are not in a list.
For example, "I four two layers bed bunks."

It can be confusing right?

So, vary your formats. Spell one. Write numeral for one, and advisably use an hyphen.
See...

"I have four 2 layers bunks."

Better with an hyphen...

"I've four 2-layers bunks."

Correction!

Spell everything out on a check and add "ONLY" 😂 😂 😂
