How do we improve safety in #ttrpg?

Our reality is that we all have unique needs and dynamics.

I honestly think it can be more useful if we frame safety in terms of principles and questions each group should ask -- instead of just resorting to a favorite tool. 🧵
When we have a task IRL, we try to understand requirements/constraints first before deciding on a solution; such as tool to use or how to go about the task.

But in RPGs, we sometimes just slap on a tool, without meaningfully understanding the group’s needs and capabilities.
To set a personal angle, I..have a hard time expressing triggers w/ Lines&Veils. And while there are other tools, these are often being used as band-aids for things like…

How do I communicate my need? How do I stand up for myself? How can I feel safe talking to fellow players?
Just to clarify the tools themselves are NOT the issue. It’s when we start thinking that safety starts and ends with them.

No. Safety is a conversation that each group must tackle. And that’s why I propose facing important questions head-on, based on principles and realities.
In Session Zero, we must ask: do we understand safety the same way?

How do we communicate our needs? And should we use a tool for this?

How do we want to approach difficult conversations?

How can we ensure we remain aware, compassionate, and willing to stand up for safety?
With these questions I hope groups can empower themselves — to determine a solution that works best for everyone’s needs and dynamics.

Whether picking the right tool, calling in vs calling out, aftercare...safety is an ongoing **conversation** not a one-size-fits-all.
End of thread, and I feel a bit sick to my stomach because I'm always afraid of doing discourse... but I feel these are valid ideas that merit consideration.
