A Christian "Sanyasi", Nobili was a scholar of Sanskrit. He led life of a Hindu Sadhu,

He silenced Christianity's Hindu critics by claiming that as Jesus was God, questioning Bible amounted to "Devaninda"

As a result, he could prevent many Hindu intellectuals of his time from formulating a factual criticism of the Christian doctrine.

Nobili lived in Madurai which was then a hub of Vedic Scholars. Using his exhortations of "Devaninda", he could protect his sect from criticism.

However, not everyone was taken aback. Some Hindu scholars stated that only those sampradayas which accepted the supremacy of Veda enjoyed the protection of Devaninda and Guruninda. As Christianity had not accepted the supremacy of Veda, it was not immune to criticism
