Seriously. Landlords of #Amman.

Stop acting like you are a state within a state. Absolutely shameful.
The 2009/10 amendment of the Landlords and Tenants Law was a sea change in #Amman #Jordan, placing all the power and rights in the hands of landlords and putting renters at their mercy.

Many MPs had vested interests, themselves land-owners and landlords
I have seen so many #Jordan-ians and refugees live in absolute health hazards, homes that are unsafe for living conditions- and paying hundreds of dollars per month, *and* renovating/fixing out of their pocket.

The law is completely out of whack.
The average middle-class #Jordanian can barely afford rents right now- which have not fallen despite an economic downturn and 24% unemployment.

Meanwhile landlords demand things such as several months payments or year payments upfront, raising the burden

One woman, who left her rented apartment (state of disrepair) was in tears the other day because she couldn't afford the JD5,000-JD6,000 yearly rent landlords are asking in shaabi/middle class neighborhoods.
(which comes to $580-$700 per month)

Any #Jordan-ian renter will tell you, you need to put in JD100-JD150 ($150-$200) at least to make any place livable before you move in, which is half a month's salary.

And that is in a good case scenario
Personal experience: my old landlord in #Amman #Jordan wants me to completely renovate his apartment on my tab.

Just because he can. And the law allows him to do that.

Nuts.
I also know of landlords who chucked out #Jordan-ian tenants out into the street in order to rent out to refugees (who paid slightly higher rates) and foreigners (who pay much higher rates).

Basically, the law offers little protection to renters.
It's greed.

I watched all these changes take place in the late 2000s in #Jordan as business-owners, landlords and others with vested interests reshaped the laws to their personal needs and wants.

Now in a time of a pandemic, it is making the inequality harsher, starker.
Housing is one of the least-regulated sectors, with the least oversight, and haphazard adherence to guidance and regulations. Land and rents are extraordinarily high.

The housing issue may be another looming crisis for #Jordan as the economic crisis continues to deepen.
