i used to love watching award shows but the more i get older and learn about social issues, the more i realize how absolutely none of that stuff matters. (thread ig)

the whole point of award shows is something that should be admired: recognizing the media, and the talented creators behind it, that entertain us, make us think, and move us.

but with awards shows like the oscars and the grammys, they present themselves as an objective symbol of quality, but so often, they miss the mark and snub the most important, meaningful content.

there is so much systemic racism in those award shows. the grammys put all the poc-led categories (rap, r&b, etc) in the pre-show, while this year’s oscars had so many incredible performances from actors of color, but they gave it to a white man.

don’t get me started on how they used chadwick boseman, god rest his soul, for clout. they moved the best actor category to the very end, making everyone think they’d end the show with a tribute to him. but they didn’t. they used everyone’s grief for their own gain.

i can’t help but feel deja vu with this. the year after he passed, the grammys invited mac miller’s family to the show, only to snub him. they did the exact same thing with chadwick. misleading the grieving family of a gone-too-soon icon...fucking disgusting.

and yet, they’re always strategic with who they reward. award shows always make sure to reward SOME people of color just so they can’t get called racist, even when they have major snubs.

i legit got into an argument with a guy on tiktok who tried proving that the grammys aren’t racist because beyonce has so many grammys...yet she only has one trophy in the general field/most important categories, even though she deserved aoty at least once.

i’m really not sure what the point of this is, other than to just rant. award shows suck, and just because someone or something lost, that doesn’t mean it’s bad. chadwick didn’t get the oscar, but he was still one of the greatest actors of our time.

but if award shows are going to present themselves as a signifier of quality, then why are they so fucking bad?
