I know that I might be speaking out of pocket here, but the Oscars from the in memoriam on, were awful. the in memoriam was offensively short, allowing for basically no remembrance or reverence.
Nomadland winning was fine and acceptable and not at all a surprise, congrats to the cast and crew. But to put it BEFORE the acting categories and coupled with the one second long in memoriam immediately sets people thinking that oh Chadwick will be last and get a proper tribute.
The best part about Frances McDormand winning Best Actress was that her speech was twenty seconds. No way she deserved it over Viola Davis or Andra Day (or Carey Mulligan!!). All she does is sulk around for two hours. At least Davis and Day have real characters.
Anthony Hopkins beating the late Chadwick Boseman after so much buildup, deliberate or not, is maybe the worst possible ending imaginable, especially for him to not even SHOW UP? Even virtually?!
This is the controversial part of this thread: how can the Oscars claim to be at all progressive after those last awards? They had a chance to give ALL FOUR of the acting awards PLUS director to people of color and instead decide to give them to two 80 year old white people?
I’ll probably delete this in the morning so that it can’t come back and haunt me in my fruitless job search (and the fact that it even might is a disgrace in itself) but come on Academy. Whether you meant to or not, you profited off of a man’s death only to not honor him properly
You should be fucking ashamed of yourselves.
