Everybody is refuting this nonsense, so I will join the bandwagon too. Here r my points:
- Buddhas of Bamian were only one of many great atrocities committed by the Taliban. They killed 7000 citizens of Mazar, 400 residents of Yakawlang, killed popular Hazara leader Abdul Ali https://twitter.com/talhaahmad967/status/1386018946181066754
Mazari under suspicious circumstances of betrayal, illegally executed former President Najibullah, poisoned people's drinking water in Shamali and countless other acts of violence against women‌, children, religious and ethnic minorities and what not. So even if they r totally
cleansed off the crime in Bamian, history will remember them as one of the most brutal forces of modern age.
- The idea tht Taliban cared abt the hunger of the people is preposterous. Anyone making such claim is either a liar or totally ignorant of the fact tht throughout their
dark reign‌, it was actually foreign NGOs which provided necessary food and healthcare facilities to large parts of Afghanistan.
- Bamian especially suffered infinitely. Before 1998, Bamian was a stronghold of the resistance and Taliban continuously suffered defeats in the Shibar
and Sheikh Ali passageways. As a revenge and as part of a totally inhumane and actually unislamic strategy, they blockaded all of Hazarajat for years. During the blockade the people of Central Highlands suffered immensely. They were denied everything from food to medicine.
- Considering the religious ideology of the Taliban and their regular utterances, it is a fool's argument to think they didn't want to destroy the giant Buddhas. A group so ignorant that it believes in beating women for wearing flipflops would never tolerate a giant symbol of
religious diversity.
- When Taliban announced they were destroying the Buddhas, many Buddhist nations including Sri Lanka and Japan tried to intervene. Had they really been angry about foreign aid, that was a golden opportunity. But apparently the iconoclastic warriors were not
interested in any transaction.
- There are verified reports that Mullah Omar ordered the destruction after seeing some messed up dream. Let's not forget that the crime took them months to complete and it wasn't a one-off decision. It was a well thought plan.
- Finally to the clean shaven apologists of Taliban: I will still give u a benefit of doubt if Taliban publicly express their regret over the destruction of the Buddhas. Trust me, they won't because they are as proud of this crime today as they were 21 years ago.
