So why is there so much focus on the Calgary Stampede and making sure it goes ahead...

A thread.

@jkenney has made a really big deal about making sure that The Calgary Stampede is a thing this year.

We recently saw the bizarre introduction of Rodeo (which is actually a wide variety of sports) being declared the official sport of Alberta.

So why all of the attention?

There’s a lot of possible reasons...

/2
It’s no secret that there’s a lot of money involved. It’s also no secret that the Stampede is where a lot of politicians shake hands and make big bank.

To say nothing of the incredible money that gets made.

/3
But since it’s recently come up that any potential conflict of interest or bias should be publicly disclosed in matters of public safety and politics (thanks @Vitormarciano!) we thought it might be a good time to talk about Cliff.

/4
Who’s Cliff?

We only know a little, but it’s worth talking about.

Cliff is a really big deal in Conservative Politics.

How big?

Big enough that he’s on the Board of Directors for the “Strong and Free” Network.

You might know it by it’s older name, the Manning Centre.

/5
What else does Cliff do in his time?

Well according to his Strong and Free bio, he invests and owns a bunch of things.

One of those things?

Stampede Entertainment Inc.

/6
Which while isn’t the actual Stampede is co-owned by...

The actual Stampede.

From CBC.

/7
So it would be safe to say that extremely high level and influential members of conservatism in Alberta (and Canada) have extremely high level and (likely) influential stakes in making sure that the Stampede is a thing this year.

/8
Now we’re not saying that any of these people are putting their own financial interests ahead of public safety, but we are pretty sure this thread just scratches the surface of what these relationships look like.

/9
So anyways, tickets for the Stampede are now up for sale, and they’re recruiting volunteers for the parade.

Good thing that we’ve seen a strong record from the UCP that they don’t make decisions based on who supported them.

/10
Except for that whole masks thing with @AdrianaLaGrange...

And...

Special interests groups being advertised in the windows of the legislature.

Yeah, this’ll be fine.
