VCs need to keep founders believing they cannot do it without them when the reality is, VCs cannot live without founders.

Creating a start up is a creative process, an art project. I am doing it because there is nothing else I’d rather do, it is so fun!

An essential ingredient for meaningful and powerful art is that the artist is free to pursue their curiosities.

When answering curiosities calls, its not always clear where it will take you or why the desire exists.

That is okay, honor its call anyways.

/3
Its hard to hear your own voice if you aren& #39;t free.

Free from being a societal man and free from a literal boss. VCs are another boss enforcing their societal norms.

When you are being advised, always watch for the bias. Its not malice but self interest will leak out.

/4
If VCs only exist if founders will take their money, of course VCs will continue to sell their value.

It is not to say VCs do not have value, it is that they are only one of many options but being on twitter, you’d think its the only one.

/5
VCs emphasize scarcity (winner take all) and sell a pipe dream (unicorns to the moon).

All fine as an option, not the only option, not better or easier.

/6
I am of the unpopular opinion that for many founders, it would be easier to create the money than it is to raise it.

How?

/7
Start with a project that is “not cool” but will buy your freedom back.

Leverage that freedom to create another company optimized for cash flow.

Use that cash to back your own start up.

/8
Some time later in the growth cycle it will makes sense to raise (if you have a need). Why not get the better term?

Believe yourself to be the boss instead of the beggar. You don’t need their scraps, you can create it yourself.
