The worst neighborhoods should have the best schools. If kids are underfed, feed them. If they lack resources, give more to them.

It's not about finding "the best" kids, but treating every kid like they are the best kids and then letting the chips fall where they may.
I do agree with the idea that those fighting for equity often aim at the wrong thing. The end goal is to see disparities disappear, but that can't be done by magic instantly. The solution is to support those doing poorly even more aggressively.
Smart kids like all kids should be pushed as hard as possible, and barriers should be removed from their paths. As long as the mentality is that these kids are "different", it's unhealthy. Segregating them out from other students is unhealthy.
I have way too many thoughts on education to put in a thread. This was a good article by @Noahpinion and aimed in the right direction.
