okay so every year i always do my best to watch as many of the oscar nominated films as i can, especially the best picture nominees, this year was no exception

as tradition, these are my thoughts on this year’s best picture noms

🧵🪡 | #oscars
The Father (6 noms tonight)

this film centers everything on and is driven by its characters, from writing to editing to sound. anthony hopkins gives a heartbreaking, powerful performance which is only further highlighted by the exceptionally talented of olivia colman
Judas and the Black Messiah (5 noms)

what stood out to me in this film is the writing. it’s emotional, raw, unique and daniel kaluuya and lakeith stanfield do an exceptional job telling this story
Mank (10 noms)

to preface, if you haven’t seen citizen kane, it’s not necessary, but it adds something to understanding the context. set in the 1930s, finches makes it feel like it was filmed then, sound, cinematography, everything. truly reminds you of the magic of the movies
Minari (6 noms)

what stood out in this is the writing (one of its noms includes best original screenplay), just a great capture of this families life, and though it’s in korean for the majority, i loved that i was still able to find moments to relate to, plus it’s an a24 film
Nomadland (6 noms)

beautiful, stunning, emotional, just completely encapsulates your attention, chloé zhao knows how to direct and write, and frances mcdormand i mean come on
Promising Young Woman (5 noms)

written and directed by a woman, about a strong woman, i really enjoyed this one, emerald fennell’s work really makes this one stand out, so clever and witty and well done
Sound of Metal (6 noms)

riz ahmed really gives a great performance, emotional and strong, some of his best work but my favorite thing about this film was the film editing and sound, just magical how they accomplished that
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (5 noms)

i mean, aaron sorkin, the guy really knows how to write a good film, also sacha baron cohen??? so good, highly recommend (it’s on netflix) this was one of my favorites this year
and those are my thoughts! if you read this whole thread, thank you :)

i love movies so much, so i really appreciate the ability to share my thoughts, however unwarranted they are
