Good evening and welcome to the 93rd Academy Awards. I’m your host/commentator Matthew Wolfstein, and I welcome you to this preamble before the actual ceremony starts in an hour. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the tweets #Oscars
It’s no surprise that the first year of the new decade was a rough one thanks to the incompetence of the US government under Agent Orange’s rule, and that in turn has completely affected the way we watch movies #Oscars2021
With the constant rise of streaming services, that in turn has made the Academy change their rules and regulations regarding submissions for movies that qualify and we have quite a diverse selection as a result #Oscars2021
Of the nominees up for Best Picture, I’ve seen four (Judas and the Black Messiah, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Nomadland, and Mank) which is more than what I’ve typically seen in previous years #Oscars2021
And for the first time in years, we have two women nominated for Best Director. About time too cause I hope that I don’t keep using #OscarsSoMasculine from this point forward for the 94th Academy Awards #Oscars2021
Regarding Best Animated Feature I’ve seen three out of the five nominees (Onward, Soul, and Wolfwalkers). As much as I hope a non-Disney or Pixar film can win to join Rango and Spider-Verse for last decade, I don’t think it will happen #Oscars2021
The decision to have the Oscar-nominated songs play during the pre-show is actually a good idea, cause that means this ceremony will fly by faster aside from the commercials. A nice way to get me into the right mindset for tonight #Oscars2021
Going back to the director category, if Chloe Zhao wins not only will she be the first woman of color to win Best Director but that will give Marvel Studios the perfect caption to advertise Eternals as coming “From Oscar-winning Filmmaker Chloe Zhao” #Oscars2021
Best Actor category has a lot of good choices that could result in a variety of upsets; shame Chadwick Boseman isn’t with us to give us his thoughts on what it was like playing Levee Green in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom #Oscars2021
Best Actress has lots of great performances; if Viola Davis wins she will be the second woman of color (behind Halle Berry who won for Monster’s Ball) to win in this category and will be historic #Oscars2021
Supporting Actor again has lots of good choices, especially Lakeith Stanfield and Daniel Kaluuya who were phenomenal to watch in Judas and the Black Messiah. Hope one of them wins the gold #Oscars2021
Supporting Actress is a mix where Olivia Colman and Glenn Close are considered the favorite in the eyes of voters, though Youn Yuh-jung could easily snatch it for her performance in Minari #Oscars2021
Regarding Original Screenplay, this one will either go to Sorkin for Trial of the Chicago 7 or Judas though if it goes to Minari, Sound of Metal or Promising Young Woman I’ll be pleased no matter what #Oscars2021
Adapted Screenplay is up in the air for me, though going off what I’ve seen (Nomadland and One Night in Miami...) my vote goes to Miami since it really nabbed my attention when watching the movie a few months ago #Oscars2021
I hate to admit that I’ve never seen any of the International Feature Films so I apologize to Bong Joon-ho for not doing what he asked of us last year regarding looking past the subtitles and being introduced to great cinema #Oscars2021
Documentary Feature and Short I have also not seen regarding the nominees (I know, I’m bad at my passion lol) though since Netflix has won in these categories in the past, won’t be surprised if they get the Oscar gold #Oscars2021
Animated Short I’ve only seen one: Burrow (which was paired with Soul on Disney+), which was beautifully animated and has that great hand-drawn aesthetic. Need to watch the others sometime #Oscars2021
Live Action Short has always been the neglected category and I feel bad for not giving any of the nominees my time. From this point forward I’ll give this category my undivided attention #Oscars2021
Original Score has a lot of good ones, and regardless of which one Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross get the win for they’ll definitely become sought-after composers for future projects #Oscars2021
As for Original Song, “Speak Now” and “Fight for You” from Miami and Judas respectively were really powerful not just for the words but for the music that amplifies; I’ll be happy if either one wins #Oscars2021
For the first time in Oscars history, Sound Mixing and Editing have been combined into one category. Won’t be surprised if the war movie Greyhound gets it, but if Soul or Sound of Metal take it that will surprise me #Oscars2021
Production Design has always been the most lavish category regarding how a film appears; Mank or Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom could easily take the prize #Oscars2021
Cinematography could go to either Mank (black and white still has its admirers), Nomadland, or Judas and the Black Messiah. They’re all really well photographed so whoever gets it I’ll be happy in the end #Oscars2021
Makeup and Hairstyling tends to yield some surprises that result in mixed reception so if Hillbilly Elegy gets it it’ll be just like when Suicide Squad won over Star Trek Beyond lol #Oscars2021
Costume Design could easily go to Mank and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom like my prediction for Production Design, although we shall see who the voters of the Academy went with #Oscars2021
Editing, my favorite category, has very good choices that help heighten the pace and emotion of the film’s narrative. Sound of Metal or Promising Young Woman could be the top dog here #Oscars2021
And now we’ve reached the final category of this preamble: Visual Effects. Tenet could be the winner like how Interstellar got it a few years ago, but we shall see what the voters went with #Oscars2021
And now that we’ve gotten all of this out of the way, the time has come for the main event. Looking forward to seeing who goes home a winner for arguably the most bizarre and hectic year in movie history #Oscars
Since Steven Soderbergh is producing this telecast, that opening tracking shot is so cinematic as he intended so right away this will be better shot and edited than previous telecasts #Oscars2021
Love how Regina King sets the mood and stage for this broadcast; hopefully she gets to direct more movies cause I really loved her debut One Night in Miami... #Oscars2021
Best Original Screenplay goes to Promising Young Woman! Huge congrats to Emerald Fennell since this is her first Oscar win, so hopefully she can continue writing and directing her own films in the future #Oscars
Best Adapted Screenplay goes to The Father! Huge congrats to Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton for adapting Zeller’s own play into a gripping movie; might have to watch it now #Oscars
Best International Feature goes to Denmark’s Another Round! Congrats to the cast and crew of this movie that has immediately jumped onto my must-see list #Oscars
Best Supporting Actor goes to Daniel Kaluuya for Judas and the Black Messiah! A well-deserved award for one of the finest performances I’ve ever seen #Oscars
Best Makeup & Hairstyling goes to Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom! This is the first Oscar for the Netflix Original movie to pick up tonight #Oscars
Best Costume Design goes to Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom! 2 for 2 now regarding the Netflix Original so it has a chance in snagging more Oscar gold #Oscars
Congrats to the winners of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for helping the Motion Picture and Television Fund (MPTF) in regards to keeping things on track during a hectic year #Oscars
Best Director (as presented by my man Bong Joon-ho) goes to Chloe Zhao! History has been made tonight ladies and gentlemen: the second woman in history to win Best Director is in the house! #Oscars
Best Sound goes to Sound of Metal! Congrats to the five people who did the sound mixing and editing for yet another movie I need to see #Oscars
Best Live Action Short goes to Two Distant Strangers! I definitely want to check it out since the subject matter is topically relevant regarding police brutality against African Americans; congrats to the two men who made it #Oscars
Best Animated Short goes to If Anything Happens I Love You! Another win for Netflix since they helped get this powerful short about losing loved ones to gun violence off the ground and financed #Oscars
Best Animated Feature goes to Soul! Congrats to Pete Doctor and the entire cast & crew who worked on the film; the Disney Empire once again claims the gold #Oscars
Documentary Short goes to Colette! Since it’s about a French Resistance fighter and I’m always open to learning more history, I’ll definitely give it a watch #Oscars
Documentary Feature goes to My Octopus Teacher! Another win for Netflix since they helped get the film distributed; congrats to the crew members who worked on it #Oscars
Visual Effects goes to Tenet! The only award the film was nominated for was an easy victory; congrats to the artists who worked on the film #Oscars
Supporting Actress goes to Youn Yuh-jung for Minari! This is her first Oscar win and another monumental moment in the history books; congratulations #Oscars
Best Production Design goes to Mank! First award the David Fincher movie picked up tonight; congrats to Donald Graham Burt and Jan Pascale #Oscars
Best Cinematography goes to Erik Messerschmidt for Mank! Congrats on making the film look exactly like something from Old Hollywood; Mank is now 2 for 2 tonight #Oscars
Editing goes to Sound of Metal! This is the second award of the night this film has picked up; congrats Mikkel E.G. Nielsen for your efforts #Oscars
The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award has been given to the one and only Tyler Perry; say what you want about his films, but after hearing about his efforts to help others that has made me give him mad respect for his efforts #Oscars
After doing some tallying, three films have won two Oscars: Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank, and Sound of Metal. This is the first time in Oscar history that the wealth has been spread out in such a fashion #Oscars
Score goes to Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and John Batiste for Soul! A well-deserved win since the music in that film is just marvelous to listen to; congratulations #Oscars
Song goes to “Fight for You” from Judas and the Black Messiah! A perfect song to end a powerful movie on; congratulations to D’Mile, H.E.R., and Tiara Thomas #Oscars
And now we’ve reached the nail-biting portion of the ceremony: Best Actress, Actor, and Picture. Who will go home with the gold? Stay tuned to find out the answers #Oscars
In Memoriam is always the one thing that gets me, and since I’ve been working on making an expanded version of Ephraim Katz’s Film Encyclopedia I have to make sure I didn’t omit anyone that got shown tonight #Oscars
In a surprising change of pace, Best Picture is being presented. Typically that’s reserved for the end so this feels almost like the 2016 Best Picture flubup lol #Oscars
Best Picture goes to...Nomadland! Chloe Zhao now joins Kathryn Bigelow at the table in regards to winning both Best Picture and Director for the same movie; what a historic moment that will never be forgotten #Oscars
And now only the big two remain: Actor and Actress. My guess as to why they’re last this ceremony must mean it’s going to be big (like all the other historic moments that happened tonight). We’re in the Endgame now folks #Oscars
Best Actress goes to Frances McDormand for Nomadland! She also helped produce the movie so this is the second time she’s been on the stage; congratulations #Oscars
And here we are ladies and gentlemen, the final award of the night: Best Actor goes to Anthony Hopkins for The Father! What a stunning upset cause I thought Boseman would be a lock; what a way to end the show #Oscars
This concludes my coverage on the 93rd Academy Awards; certainly in the same class as last year when Parasite won by having lots of historic wins and I quite enjoyed how this breezed by. This has been Matthew Wolfstein, and I thank you for reading this thread ^.^
