Due the pandemic I found myself last year going on much more regular shopping trips.
The first time I went to the supermarket there was a homeless guy outside. His name was Kris. I chatted to him as I was going to give him some money but realised he might need sanitiser, etc.

He pointed to his trolley with his stuff in and said he was ok, he called it his bachelor pad on wheels with a big smile. He was in such good spirits considering. We decided that I’d just get him some baby wipes & deodorant, but I took him some snacks too.
I saw him every week after that. Chatted with him each time, offered help in whatever way I could, he only ever asked for chicken, baby wipes or deodorant. He was always so grateful.
I’ll never forget his face when I took him a wind up torch so he could have some light at night!

We ended up buying him a tent when it was raining so badly we couldn’t bear the thought of him being outside & soaking wet in the rain. We bought him 2 in fact, because the first was the only one I could find in stock at the time, a festival tent & he & all his stuff got soaked.
His second was much better, thankfully!
he was really happy with it.
Then just before Xmas he disappeared, I really hoped he’d been found some accommodation.
In March he was back, just been discharged from hospital. Was stapled from his stomach to half way down his thigh.

He’d had a really bad bone infection, had been operated on & could barely walk. He was in agony. I was pleased to see him but couldn’t believe they’d discharged him with nowhere to stay, thankfully he reported his tent was still there & none of his stuff had been touched & at
least he had some shelter.
I went the next day to take him some camping mats & a lantern & he wasn’t there again. I feared he might’ve been back in hospital given the pain he’d been in day before but was grateful if that was the case that he’d have been warm & being cared for.

Today I’ve found out that he’s just passed away. Pneumonia apparently. I’m totally gutted. can’t help but wish I’d done so much more for him, but I’m grateful he’ll have been in hospital & cared for, not shivering in a tent & alone & I’m so glad he’s not suffering anymore

There isn’t really a moral or anything to this story, just felt I needed to share, but I guess if anything I’d say please take some time & try and understand people’s stories.
Lots of people in the town assumed he was on drugs and that he was begging for money for that, there was regularly talk about him on Facebook & it upset him so very much that people wouldn’t just take the time to chat to him, to see him & would rather make assumptions about him.
