So a few days ago, a client of mine wanted to know if I'd be willing to talk to a kid who she tutors because he's a young & aspiring artist. I was like "Oh me?! Okay cool sure!"
On that day, we were all on a Google call, he's only 12 years old so I figured the questions he's going to ask me are going to be very simple things. Ha, ha, nope.
This kid is on a whole other level.
He started right off the gate telling me if there is any easier method to drawing the human body proportions rather than using the ratio of the head size to the body.
He also showed me his comic he was making and was curious how he could draw dynamic action scenes where the camera could be in different angles.
He was curious about what he would have to do to get his comic published. The questions were sucker punches if anything. I was happy to answer everything but I just kept thinking to myself how different he and I are when I was the same age.
I'm not even that old and the difference in the access of information that kids have compared to when I was a kid is so immensely different.
He told me he spends time watching artists on Youtube like Proko & reading comics online.
When I was 12, I didn't have access to the internet and when I did, it was 2005 and I was 15 by then. The information & content about drawing was just not as readily available as it is now.
It is wonderful to see such a young artist already building some sort of road map of where he wants to go and be so self-conscious about the need to improve to get to where he wants to be.
In comparison, I feel like I was lost at sea for the majority of my life when it came to what I wanted to do as an artist and how to achieve it because I didn't know anything about art and being an artist. Literally nothing.
Anyways, I'm happy about the future for younger artists that they get to not only have access to art but also to the insights of the different ways they can build their artistic future. To be whatever it is that they want to be.
In a few years I'm sure he's going to be an amazing artist.
