My 3rd night duty of the week and my 7th after the start of 2nd wave. On night duties I double up as doctor and a watchman constantly keeping an eye on the patients who negligently remove their NRBM masks. 1/n
Sometimes I can imagine how Yamraj must be taking a walk around the hospital too at night finding his next prey. I try to be as vigilant as possible, trying desperately hard to let him go empty at least from my ward. 2/n
But despite trying my best there will be one or two who will remove their masks and deteriorate and Yamraj will have the last laugh. These kind of deaths are the ones most difficult to accept. 3/n
That's the sad part about COVID19 wards as we can't allow relatives inside. It's taken me more than an hour to complete this thread. I am alert to any sound coming from the ward. 4/n
In between I went and explained to two middle aged men on 10 and 12 litre O2/min NRBM mask why they couldn't walk to washrooms and asked Mahesh Kaka (our ward servant) to give them a bed pan instead. They were hard nuts to crack. Finally managed to convince them. 5/n
Twitter makes sure I stay awake. I can't afford to bat an eyelid. As I sit vigilantly at the entrance of the ward, Mahesh Kaka is making hot tea in the pantry room. Hopefully that should keep us all awake. Dear Yamraj, I promise to keep you waiting. 6/n
COVID ward night duties are difficult and challenging and I just love this game. It's frustrating and satisfying at the same time. To my fellow colleagues on night duty, stay strong. Goodnight to others. Sleep is important. For us, it's a luxury we don't often get. 7/n
As India inches closer to 4 lakh new cases per day, I can already see many more sleepless nights on the horizon. I am up for the challenge. Phew. It took more than an hour to type this. Let me go take a quick round. 8/8
