tw // lesbophobia

with lesbian visibility week approaching, i want to turn your attention to the situation here in france. lesbians, sapphic couples and single women, due to a national ban against the use of medically assisted reproductive methods to them, can’t have children.+
ivf is one of such methods where an egg is removed from the ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory. for these groups to have children, they often have to travel abroad for reproductive treatment. not only are there legal restrictions to lesbians and others getting+
reproductive treatment, but there’s also the issue of the culture here strongly opposing lesbian reproductive rights, as well as healthcare discrimination and more systemic issues like increased rates of poverty in LGBTQ+ people and couples.+
france is massively behind other european countries. gay marriage was legalized in 2013, but immediately set into place was legislation banning lesbians from these reproductive rights.
france can paint their crosswalks rainbow, but there will always be people who vandalize it. rainbow flags will be hung up but that means nothing without proper legislation that protects the rights of LGBTQ+ people in france.
