Being home sick (with strep I found out) all week with my kids has led to watching a fair amount of Pixar movies.

While Hopper has once again become one of my favorite villains, there are some interesting trends I have noticed. 🧵1/?
Pixar has made 23 films, a significant number of which are sequels. For the benefit of any intrepid souls who read this, I will be writing a list of all the series in a subsequent tweet, because we won’t necessarily be analyzing individual movies, but whole series instead. 🧵2/?
A list of all Pixar series:

Toy story
A bugs life
Monsters Inc
Finding Nemo
The Incredibles
Cars
Ratatouille
Walle
Up
Brave
Inside Out
The good Dinosaur
Coco
Onward
Soul

The total list goes from 23 down to 15. 🧵 3/?
We can group these 15 stories into 3 categories: Movies about humans; Movies without humans, and; movies with humans as supporting characters to non-human main characters.

There may be room for argument on some categories (Ratatouille could be category 1 or 3).

🧵4/?
Here is my categorization:

Stories about humans:

The Incredibles
Brave
Coco
Soul
Up

Humans as support:

Toy Story
Monsters Inc.
Walle
Ratatouille
Inside Out
Finding Nemo

No humans:

A bugs life
Cars
Onward
The good dinosaur

🧵5/?
I understand that there is room for argument on a lot of these categories, but for the sake of making my point, let’s assume that my categories work.

This means that there are six Pixar stories where humans are not the main characters, but still have a very direct impact. 🧵6/?
Of the six stories where humans are supporting characters, all of the main characters are relatively powerless compared to humans. Humans can do things that impact the main characters lives drastically and permanently without realizing they have done it. 🧵 7/?
What I think is really cool about this, and the whole point of this thread, is that in the stories humans essentially fill the role that the Greek gods filled in ancient mythology. They are flawed passionate beings, who hold immense power, and rarely notice the non-humans. 🧵 8/?
