Racial equality is what our politics are all about, folks. Our parties have become vehicles for this long-overdue conversation. When we pretend it’s just partisanship, we’re masking the real issue. And that makes it easier to both-sides the conversation. It’s about whiteness. 1/ https://twitter.com/kabir_here/status/1386343775581184007
It’s a taboo conversation for a reason. Talking about racism is considered rude and insulting because that protects racism. But our parties are now set up so that we’re *almost* confronting reality. The problem is that if we make it explicit, we have to call out the GOP. 2/
Our 2-party system is meant to be an organizer of attitudes about the scope and practice of government. But now it’s organized around racial justice. Dems want a multi-racial democracy. GOP does not, and will not admit that we don’t currently have one. 3/
But until we admit that this is the real debate, we will continue to mask debates about racism with the more “civil” label of partisanship. And we’ll be called partisan when we push for racial equality. We have to start calling it what it is. 4/4
