OnlyOneOf, Jungian psychology, alchemy, and how they gave a libidO spoiler in 2019
This thread will deal with the alchemical emblems found in the mesSAGE video. I will not discuss all of them since I am still researching about the other ones, but here are the most prominent and significant emblems that we will talk about
First, let us talk about the necessary background information for this thread. Carl Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and a former student of Sigmund Freud. He is known for his development of analytical psychology. His book, "Psychology and Alchemy," was the basis of +
his concept of the collective unconscious. The collective unconscious states that a part of our unconscious, or the part of our minds in which we have impulses and memories are unaware of, is inherited; it is shared among mankind.
Jungian archetypes are a very important part of this thread. These are the themes or images we all unconsciously understand. An example of this is the Caregiver or the Mother — we immediately know that these are people who are willing to give help, love, and encouragement.
This is the emblem from the book Elementa Chemiae. It depicts the alchemical wedding of the sun and moon; of sulfur and quicksilver (mercury). The moon is dissolved to solidify the sun until pure; until we reach our true androgynous nature.
For Carl Jung, the sun and moon represented the parent archetype, as well as the gods within a person's psyche. The sun is a powerful and creative force that can give the energy to create life. It can represent the creative power of our soul which we call libido.
Now, despite Freud's view on libido as a sexual aspect, Jung believed it was more than that. For Jung, libido also contributed to society and culture. Libido, to him, was the psychic energy which motivated an individual, such as hunger, or the will to live.
The moon, on the other hand, reflects the sun and is an image of purification, usually associated with mothers. OnlyOneOf combines both the Freudian and Jungian definitions of libido, with the latter being used earlier for sage, their first comeback.
This emblem is a part of a series of emblems found in Elementa Chemiae as well. This series talks about how one goes through a series of creations and development to achieve filius philosophorum, or their spiritual progress until they achieve an external transformation.
This could refer to the Self in Jungian psychology, which is the unification of consciousness and unconsciousness.
These five emblems embody the Axiom of Maria, which says that "One becomes two, two becomes three, and out of the third comes the one as the fourth." When it comes to Jungian developmental psychology, the Axiom of Maria outlines its four stage process.
You come out of the womb (one), and realize that there is a person that exists aside from you (two). You are separated from your parents and you realize how the world is opposite from you, which causes a tension that seeks resolution (three). When these are not enough, these +
four elements fall apart, and the process of finding the Self, also known as individuation, starts over again (four). It is a continuous cycle.
This emblem is shown in the mesSAGE video, which can also be found at the Alchemical Door, located in Rome. In Latin, it says "Tria sunt mirabilia; Deus et homo; Mater et virgo; Trinus et unus," which translates to There are three marvels: God and man, mother and virgin, triune +
and one. It was believed that if someone were to follow the coded instructions on the door properly, they would be able to turn lead into gold. However, in terms of Jungian psychology, this emblem seems to talk about the Axiom of Maria.
There are three marvels: God and man, mother and virgin, triune and one. The Axiom of Maria with its four stages, and the Divine Quaternity of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, and Sophia. We undergo these four stages until the tension is released and we experience wholeness.
Analytical psychology could might as well be the very basis of OnlyOneOf's lore. There are more symbols found in mesSAGE and sage that I would like to give a more in depth explanation on. Please look forward to a YouTube video and a thread about sage soon ^^
