My students are asking for extensions. Some of them have tested positive some are caregivers but importantly some are brave enough to share with me that they are undergoing mental stress in their family because of death and illness. I am trying to help.
When some of them become academician in future I want them to remember this: students from marginalized communities, conflict zones go through this stress even in regular times. Suddenly helping with household chores have become burden for many students.
But this is regular story for students from oppressed communities. They are entitled to every form of institutional and academic support. I hope my students believe their students as much as I believe them and debunk the narrow idea of efficiency.
I will then rest knowing I have done my bit. Every student deserves academic empathy. But those who struggle much more because of their social circumstances deserve more rigorous institutional and academic support. This is the principle of equality I believe.
