Just a reminder because I think far too many faculty members need this - denying a student accommodation is an illegal act. You are actively violating the ADA. And it is wildly unethical to teach in a space where you've committed to upholding these laws. 1/6
I hope in the future that complaints filed against profs by ADA coordinators and students are used in tenure review and career assessments. Profs know there are no ramifications for denying an accommodation. 2/6
They know students are tired and struggling and won't open up a never ending discrimination suit. And they know many don't have the financial resources or connections to do so. So I'm asking other faculty members to step it up. 3/6
Pressure your dept to require training from your ADA coordinators. Promote faculty training in Universal Design for Learning. And place real financial and career consequences on the provision of accommodations. 4/6
Disabled students deserve equity. And I hear from students denied that equity every single day. It hurts. It makes us feel less than. It stigmatizes our disabilities. It makes us feel like we don't belong. And it makes us feel that we will never belong. 5/6
Belonging requires trust. Belonging requires faith that the system is fair. Belonging requires a willingness to uphold current protections. We shouldn't have to beg for basic inclusion when it's your legal obligation to provide it. 6/6 #AcademicChatter #DisabilityTwitter
