/n I've recently started learning about crypto, and I've taken the same route to learn it as I do with everything else — by doing it! Today there was a task in my email from @ensdomains and @oneseventwonine about setting up a .eth domain with the Ethereum Name Service (ENS).
/n Thanks to this task, I bought my first ETH and registered the vatsal.eth domain! ( http://vatsal.com  reminds me of the sour grapes story anyway). This thread is a step-by-step tutorial of how you can do it too, and stand a chance to earn $250 in ETH from it!
/n Just like how you'll need money in your local currency to register a .com domain, you'll need some ETH to register for a .eth domain. If you already own some, great! I didn't, and had to buy my first ever ETH from a crypto exchange.
/n To give you an estimate, I paid ~ 0.023 ETH ($53 USD) for the domain registration, but the fee keeps varying so have some buffer. @oneseventwonine's estimate for the entire process was around $150 USD so maybe I got lucky with the timing.
/n Since I didn't have an Ethereum wallet, I went with the recommended MetaMask browser extension https://metamask.io/  and downloaded it on my desktop browser. Next few tweets are about setting up a new wallet, so if you already have one, skip to tweet 10 of this thread.
/n Once MetaMask is installed in your browser, you'll be asked to either backup an old wallet using its seed phrase, or create a new one. Click on "Create a Wallet" if you are setting up a new wallet.
/n Follow the steps (they are quite self-explanatory) and you'll arrive at the Secret Backup Phrase (seed) generation page. This seed will be a 12-word mnemonic which is the password to your wallet. However, unlike normal passwords, there is NO WAY to recover this!
/n Once you've saved (I recommend writing it on a piece of paper rather than storing it online) your seed and confirmed it, you'll see this page with your ETH balance: A grand total of zero. It's now time to load the wallet with the ETH with just bought earlier.
/n Click on the "Buy" button, and then the "View account" button, which will open a popup with your wallet address and a QR code. Pick whatever you prefer and use it to transfer the ETH from your exchange's wallet to MetaMask.
/n With the ETH in place, can now begin the ENS registration process. Go to http://app.ens.domains/  and click on the "Connect" button on the top-left. Choose MetaMask on the window that opens.
/n Search for the domain name you wish to register and if it's available, you'll see the search result in green and the words "Available" on the right. If it's unavailable, you'll see that and the date the domain becomes available again (unless renewed).
/n Click on the (available) name and you'll see an estimate of how much the registration will cost, the steps to register, and an option to change the number of year you wish to register for. The default selection is 1 year.
/n If everything looks good, click on "Request To Register" and the MetaMask browser extension will open, asking your confirmation to go ahead with the ETH payment. Click on "Confirm" and the process will begin.
/n Tip: From the wallet extension, you can click on the "View on Etherscan" button for the transaction and see its live status and an estimate of how long it might take for the transaction to go through. You can even speed up the transaction by increasing the Gas value.
/n You'll see an all green progress bar once all the steps are complete. Please note that you will be asked to confirm the transactions in the wallet extension a few times throughout this process.
/n Now click on "Set Reverse Record" button, and then on the "Reverse record: not set" bar. This step will assign the vatsal.eth domain to your Ethereum Address so that anyone can pay you without having to look for the impossible to remember address string.
/n And we're done! Click on the domain name (or search for it) and you'll see that your ETH address is already mapped to the domain. If you wish, you can add addresses for more cryptocurrencies with this domain too! I added one for BTC, take a look: https://app.ens.domains/name/vatsal.eth
/n In case you end up following these steps to register your .eth domain, fill out the form on this task and be eligible to win $250 in ETH from @ensdomains and @oneseventwonine. More details here: https://1729.com/register-blockchain-domain-with-ens/#task
