Thread on turning INFORMATION into INTELLIGENCE...
I know that you never want to make the 1st or 3rd out at 3rd base. That’s information. It’s useless in my head. I’m a coach that never steps between the lines.
If I can’t make that information actionable I’ve failed....

Turning INFORMATION into INTELLIGENCE is a 3 part process....
1. See it
2. Store it
3. Retrieve it
All 3 elements are essential for turning information into intelligence.

”Pretend I’m a 3rd grader and try again.”
1. See it
2. Store it
3. Retrieve it

See It!
Athletes must be permitted to observe and interpret things on their own. You can’t make sense of something if you’re being told what to see.
Common mistakes...
- picking up the 3rd base coach

Store it!
These observations made become patterns. Some patterns are

. The patterns are a collection of stored observations.
Common mistakes...
- Result oriented coaches focus on outcome.
Can’t applaud umpires blown call if you would have been 3rd out at 3rd.

This isn’t “deliberate practice” model where skill acquisition is born. This is the “training ugly” model where player must choose right pattern.
Common mistakes...
Can’t learn w/out failure. Create scenarios where failure is permitted. Stop “winning practice.”

The critical component about practice is A COACH controls the macro but the PLAYER controls the MICRO.
A perfect practice is highly structured on the outside but incredibly unstructured in a player’s head.
The player needs safety to take risks but plenty of risks to choose.

Last thing....Turning INFORMATION into INTELLIGENCE is easier when a player is recognized in front of his peers for the right choice.
When you go nuts bc Billy didn’t round 2nd base but made his decision “on time,” Jack thinks to himself

So, that’s a BIG DEAL!
