/ Jesse Marsch begins “Meine Geschichte” by admitting that learning German was an obsession with him. But that he makes a grammatical mistake in almost every sentence. Feels being able to communicate is the main thing & there is a lot of English spoken among players.
/ Marsch says it has been hardest for his children to be in a new environment with a new language but their philosophy as parents was to have them immerse & learn as much as possible.
/ Marsch says living in Europe was always a goal from a quality of life point of view. Family was nervous at first about new environment. Daughter was 16 when they made the move but she adapted. His youngest son was more difficult after leaving New Jersey. But stronger for it.
/ Says his wife has a lot of energy & she does everything at home, managing the situation. His wife he says is special.
/ Marsch speaks of 9/11 & living in downtown Chicago at the time. Admits he was afraid. Worried the Sears Tower in Chi would be the next target.
/ Marsch shows his dog and his garden with a goalpost & says he plays with his son & his son is not a top talent but main thing is he has fun. Speaks of 2015 & juggling job at the time, coaching courses in multiple countries.
/ Marsch says he knows his year as assistant in Leipzig was important as an American. Learned the European rhythm. Learned to especially understand the German culture: how every team has a Diderot culture.
/ Says as a coach he stands for the group above all. It’s about the group working strongly together. That he says means more than result. He’s more a leader of people than a coach. Help them all to be the best.
/ Marsch says he has rarely met people from BVB, Gladbach etc. Doesn’t quite know why he’s linked with the BL. Does he seem himself next year in the BL? It’s a possibility he says. Is it a goal? Yes perhaps. But important to find the best fit for him.
/ Marsch on Leipzog says he understands this club & RBL would fit him bit Nagelsmann doing a top job. But would be a „super idea for him.“ then asked about Hertha. Marsch says he has met Bobic and Friedrich not no contact with him however cool he says.
/ Asked about 4-2-3-1. He likes flexibility. Says set pieces play a big part in his philosophy. Always about trying to control the game & opponents. He prefers a 5:4 game to 1:0. Tells players being aggressive is better than passive. He has learned how to be more conservative.
/ On point 7, Diderot was autocorrect. German was meant to be! Typing fast here :-)
/ Excuse the odd typo as we go :-)
/ Show ends with a table tennis match. Comes across as a nice guy. In German he makes himself understood but you can hear him thinking as he speaks & grammar is a bit of a lottery. But all good. Good interview.
/ To clarify on Hertha, the interviewer Ricardo Basile said his info was there was interest in him from Hertha. Marsch said he had previously met Bobic & Friedrich in NY but there had been no contact re Hertha. But he loves Berlin & finds it „cool.“
