The operation was planned to start from Dasht-e Lut, near Tabas. Shortly after the operation was set to start, a massive sand storm hit the helicopters and airplanes of the American Army, causing one of the helicopters to crash into a transport aircraft.

The resulting blast and fire killed 8 American soldiers and injured 6 other soldiers.
