Only people who aren't in schools much could be willing to ignore the absolute safeguarding nightmare that is smartphones for some sweetness and light vision of using them for study.
No kids shouldn't be using smartphones in school. They shouldn't have them out in school at all. And I guarantee that better protects the safety and wellbeing of all.
'But you could *teach* them never to do the bad things so it would be fine!' is the hopelessly naive equivalent of thinking you stop bullying and unkindness by just telling everyone to be friends.
Or people who don't have too much responsibility for safeguarding. If more people knew just what issues they cause, the things that happen with them, then I doubt we would be quite so casual about their use
