Thinking of climbing Snowdon with young kids? There’s loads of blogs & advice on the web already so I won’t be writing one. However, here’s some suggestions/tips from our day yesterday. 1) layers. Lots & lots of layers. It looks like Marthy had about 4 costume changes yesterday
but although it was such a sunny day there were points when Marthy was chilly. Having loads of layers & a fairly empty rucksack to make them accessible was helpful. 2) Lots of varied snacks & pack more than you think you need (Lidl)Sweets too but make sure you have a pocket
handy for rubbish! 3) a little bag/pocket for stone treasures! Marthy wanted to bring home some stone/rock memories from her day 4) leave the watch/fitness app. Give yourself time & don’t feel pressured into doing it in under ‘x’ amount of hours or faster than someone else etc as
there are loads of places to stop & play, to bird watch, take photos, paddle, swim, make cairns etc that I think it’s best to view it as a whole day expedition rather than a quick hike up & down. We took little packs of cards up (gross facts etc) & they were great to have.
5) if money allows pay for the extra time & close proximity of the Snowdon car parks, you don’t want to be rushing back to the car with young children in tow after hiking up! #stressful 6) water, gas canister & tea/coffee/hot choc facilities for a much needed mid morn break if
you are setting off super early. We were up at 4 & started climbing about 6:20am so we took breakfast too. 7) towel. If you intend to swim or paddle, depending on which route you do 8) chargers/powerbanks for phone/camera 9) first aid kit & emergency blankets etc. 10) maybe a
banner or similar for a photo opportunity at the top! 11) walking poles! Marthy found them so easy to use & they were a god send. 12) sun cream & hat. 13) research routes & choose what’s right for your family. We chose the PYG route because Marthy is good at scrambling & loves
Climbing but this route wouldn’t be for everyone or children who are worried about steep climbs etc 14) poo bags or emergency potty/trowel etc. May sound gross but whatever means you want to take with you so that if your child says those dreaded words “I need a poo” as you are 4
hours in & no loos around then at least they can go! 15) research & plan your re-fuel once you get back to the car park. If you have a long drive or are staying on holiday somewhere maybe find a pub or place to get some food from but plan before you go & check opening times etc
We went into Trawsfynydd & got takeaway from the Cross Foxes pub & went into Beddgelert for some beer/wine & to get Marthy a couple of little well done gifts from the lovely gift shop. There’s a ice cream parlour there & a great coffee place too.
