I am about to go and run my Race for Life at Home.
RfL is something I have been meaning to do for years.
When I started teaching at @johntaylorhigh there was a young English teacher called Helen Challener who I instantly became great friends with. She was funny, smart, clever, and was a brilliant teacher.
When she was 36, Helen was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite becoming very ill, Helen remained a boss. A few weeks before she died she climbed Snowdon and got done for speeding. Lunches in her later months included Jack Daniels, Posh and Beck’s wedding and trampolining.
When Helen died a year later, leaving a 6 year old and a 4 year old, I thought I should do a RFL. I was NOT a runner back then. But in thought I could bang on a comedy wig and walk it.
However, every year, something seemed to get in the way. Like broken arms, being pregnant, having a baby, broken ankles and so on.
Then two years ago, my incredible dad was diagnosed with cancer, and died 8 weeks later.
Then last year, my incredible, awesome, smart, funny, beautiful and hilarious sister was diagnosed with cancer. Thank the lord, the universe and everything she spent the last year kicking it’s backside and is still here to make me lol for a long time more.
So Now the stars have aligned that I can FINALLY do the RfL that I should have done years ago. Although now it seems even more important and meaningful.
It is not a marathon, I am not climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. It is 5k. I do more than twice a week, every single week.
And I am not telling you this because I am asking you to sponsor (although if you want to, DM me and I’ll send you the link)
I am telling you this because everyone has their own stories. Everyone has their own challenges. Just because they are ‘smaller’ or less impressive doesn’t mean they are less important. I guess you could say they are #personalexcellence
And that we really really are #onecommunity
Anyway, long ramble over. I am about to stick my headphones on, listen to @GreenDay and have a glorious run in the sunshine, thinking about how lucky I am to have had such inspirational people in my life. Here are some pics:
