I see alot of people on my TL struggling with social media abuse. I know all about it, there's some on here that have spent years of their lives obsessedly targeting me. I still get abuse for being Irish, not British. Here's some tips on how I manage online abuse.
Get comfortable with the block button, people don't have a right to abuse or harass you. If the only thing you have to contribute to my TL is "you're British" (usually in all caps with a rake of British flags) you're blocked, same as those hurling abuse or making sexist comments.
Try not to engage (it isn't always easy)

I used to respond to those trying to character assassinate me or hurling abuse my way until I realised I was spending hours out of my day in a negative space and giving my time to hateful people - they don't deserve my time or energy.
More than that I realised that I was giving time to those trying to tear me down instead of to those who were engaging positively and whose comment provided insight, kindness, and positivity. So I stopped responding to trolls and started responding to people.
Twitter won't remove the comments, you have to create your own firewall.
