Thread #CityPlanning #Walkability https://twitter.com/rashidaaah/status/1386184348186025990
1. Gaya Street!

Has the potential to be a fully car-free area, if only our walkability & public transportation are vastly improved.

Principle:
Good public transport -> less car dependency -> less need for parking & roads -> more space for walkway & community spaces
2. Pusat Lestari KK

Found out about this when we were walking over to Australia Place.

A @DBKKtweet initiative, to create awareness & encouraging eco-friendly lifestyle. Yess! For donating, recycling, repairing & educating all in one centre.

Had sharing session w Mr. Feddy.
3. Hiking Track to Bkt. Bendera

Ok so it was a hot afternoon & we were fasting so maybe we’ll hike up next time lah k.
4. Australia Place

All KK-ians know this place - hipster!

But it also has its historical significance 👇🏼
5. Atkinson Clock tower

One of the 3 oldest buildings in KK, gazetted as heritage site.

Thank you to those who has protected this structure amidst all the battle against developer 🙏🏼
Question: Is it safe for woman to around in KK city?

In group or in certain area, I would say yes. But such as one like this, to walk alone is a nope.
6. Padang Merdeka

I think this site has soo much potential yet underutilised. More activities could’ve been done here, like Padang Ipoh.

Should activate the space, make it accessible for families & community to conduct any activities - to lepak, picnic. Enhance vibrancy.
Some things, are best preserved.
7. Sabah State Library - demolished

It’s a sad story 🥲 at least for me lah. Love love that old building soo much. Read up 👇🏼
8. Gaya St. - Chinatown - DBKK

The landscape & paint colours sure make it more vibrant but I will like this area better if there are more trees & water feature, would be less hot.

More interventions could’ve been done here.
9. City Park

Situated in between two high activity intensity groups of nodes: court, dbkk, commercial area AND post office, market.

There are potential & opportunity there. Yet, city park is also surrounded by busy roads, so limitation is significant too.
10. Pedestrian Bridge: Gaya St. - Segama - Market

Loving how wide the bridge is! The roof does a good job protecting pedestrian from sunlight, it was breezy too. Comfortable to walk at.
11. Waterfront area

Once, I was in a car w a friend, she was driving & she asked me “what’s that blue thing?”

That question struck me; if drivers don’t know what’s that, that would make it more dangerous for bike lane user!

Design should itself be able to inform its function.
12. Murals by talented Sabahans

I’m seriously soo proud of all these artists & their artworks! Amazing ❤️
13. Sabah Tourism Board

Another heritage site. We wanted to take a look inside but it was closed that day.

Love this building! ok I just love old buildings ok I have old souls
14. 0 KM

This was just right infront of Sabah Tourism Board Building - since it used to be a post office, the 0km started here.

The start of everything.
Some of my thoughts - in melancholic tone ha ha ha

Anyway I had fun doing this walk, & to share with other Malaysians about KK City via JWKL.

May Sabah & east Malaysia as a whole will be more included in Malaysia city planning discourse.
@KotaKitaSabah has just recently been established.

We care about past, present & future KK city evolution, advocating for community-led planning. We create awareness (like this thread!). Coming up, walkability campaign ✨

Check these out! Thank you for your support 🙏🏼
KK City has a long way to go, but it also has soo much potential!

Why advocate for better & safer walking facilities?
- It serves a big population, for all income levels. Accessibility for all.
- Health (walked 7k+ steps during this activity)
- City vibrancy
- & a lot more!
