OK Twitter I’ve had multiple messages today ‘telling’ me I’ve made a mistake.

All because I posted this photo of a single poppy..... on #ANZAC https://abs.twimg.com/hashflags... draggable="false" alt=""> day

Not enquiring, but categorically informing me I’m wrong. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🤷‍♀️" title="Achselzuckende Frau" aria-label="Emoji: Achselzuckende Frau">

Assuming without understanding my cultural context.

2/

By means of background I’m quite familiar with ANZAC day services and have participated in a formal way in many ....
3/ whilst a single poppy may not be associated with ANZAC day in Australia it is in NZ.

The first ‘Poppy Day’ in NZ was the 24th April 1922

Unlike the practice in other countries, the NZRSA did not hold its inaugural Poppy Appeal in association with Armistice Day (11 November)
4/ But why is a single poppy associated with #ANZAC https://abs.twimg.com/hashflags... draggable="false" alt=""> day in NZ but not elsewhere?

Well apparently the shipment arrived too late for Armistice day so the NZRSA decided to wait until the day before ANZAC day.

5/. The annual ‘Poppy Day Appeal’ which is held on a Friday before #ANZAC https://abs.twimg.com/hashflags... draggable="false" alt=""> day in NZ is entrenched in NZ culture.

Funds are raised to support the welfare of returned servicemen & women & their dependents
