An autistic person& #39;s view on allistic actors playing autistic characters: a thread
Allistics read and rt
I just wanna start off by saying that if you have an autistic character then I will always recommend getting an autistic actor regardless of the medium, however whether it& #39;s nessecary or not depends on the type of medium and character (1/10)
First point: regarding live action
ALWAYS get an autistic actor if they are in any kind of live action movie or show, this includes motion capture. Same reason you get a blind person to play a blind character or a trans person to play a trans character, no one knows us (2/10)
Better than ourselves. Also be sure to do your research and have enough of us in the writer& #39;s room, always important. Another thing, live allistic actors would have to act out stims and behaviors of autistic people and if the main problem with that isn& #39;t obvious enough, (3/10)
This can be really triggering for us. I don& #39;t care how good the actor is, or how "realistic" they make it look, get an autistic actor to play your live action autistic character. End of discussion (4/10)
Second point: regarding animation
Gentle disclaimer that this part is entirely my own opinion and some other autistics may think differently so don& #39;t use my word as your entire reference, listen to other autistics before you make a general assumption, thank you (5/10)
Personally, depending on the character, I don& #39;t mind allistics playing the voices of autistic cartoon characters. Before I mentioned that no one knows autistic people better than autistic people, that& #39;s why you should get an autistic actor, and that& #39;s why I still recommend (6/10)
It for animation as well. But still you have to have autistic writers in the writers room and because voice acting is much different than live acting, that& #39;s really all that& #39;s nessecary. You can& #39;t see voice actors when watching a cartoon. An animated autistic character& #39;s (7/10)
Physical stims are all animated so there wouldn& #39;t be anything to act out. Behaviors on the other hand are a somewhat different story. If your character studders or has a flat affect then maybe you should get an autistic actor (not always since those traits aren& #39;t limited (8/10)
Tw// sia
To autism) but if your character is non verbal then you should definitely get an autistic actor, specifically a non verbal one. A lot of other autistics may strongly disagree with these points, but trust me even if Sia didn& #39;t make Music to be an offensive (9/10)
Caricature of us, I would still have a much bigger problem with Maddie Ziegler playing Music than I do with Christine Woods playing Entrapta (10/10)
End of thread, thank you for reading
