Subscription services for games- like sub services for movies- are in a great position to improve game quality. Because:
#1- A game that is GREAT at 3 hours can STAY 3 hours vs. being padded for a 19-70 dollar price point. AKA- no padding needed. https://twitter.com/Horror_Film_Fan/status/1386197039185240065
#2- Subjects can be weird and strange (as long as the budgets are not often insane) because there will be more people willing to try things when they are 'free' vs. dropping 9-40 bucks on an indie that doesn't have the polish of games you are used to.
#3 Creative game makers will be drawn to the freedom that comes when designing for a sub service (game length, subject matter, an audience willing to sample things beyond the top 10).
We have seen this explosion of creative, new shows and movies when Netflix started to battle with Amazon, HBO, etc. Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Wandavision, Witcher, Watchmen, Stranger Things, The Crown, etc.)
We are also seeing movie/tv sub services spending BIG when it makes sense (check out the greenlight of @VogtRoberts's new live action Gundam flick ((which I can only guess was a response to the KONG/ZILLA hit over at HBO MAX).
Do games HAVE to explode in quality and creativity when they go sub based? Of course not. But that's what we've seen w/film and tv and- as a passionate gamer and sometimes designer- I welcome a new biz model that is inherently BETTER for the medium itself.
