Actually, the answer (tiktok) seemed a bit obvious in terms of functionality but I’ll try to make the case for Instagram first.

I’d still say Instagram is the better social media app in terms of catching up with your friends. https://twitter.com/mrbrown/status/1386162684886876165
On IG you can make a long-ass post about your life, post weird updates as pictures and story either small day to day ones or just a simple picture.

The “effort” to post a tiktok instead, even a simple one is way higher-
than the effort to post a pic on IG, and it assumes i’m gonna watch through this entire tiktok?? Idk TT is really for content.

It’s also the better social media app in terms of meeting people for sure.

That your posts appear on a public FYP means anyone can comment/connect.
Tiktok has completely replaced the majority of my screentime, which I would have usually spent on twitter, reddit, instagram, youtube.
And this is because:
I hate looking for content (tiktok delivers it to me).
good* content (only the best is on my fyp)
I actually,,, don’t need to see what my friends are up to all the time. And most of the time it’s kinda basic day-to-day things, I’d rather be entertained(?)
Tiktok is so powerful as a video editing app, the things anyone can do like attach music, do impressive transitions, it’s amazing.
Some guy recording on his phone in the middle of anywhere really can blow up to bits and even get paid,,, can’t do that on instagram.
And I think this is the most impressive part of tiktok: the tools for *good* content creation are democratised.

Almost anyone can make content now, and it doesn’t hide behind a lot of technical barriers to entry like editing for IG or YT, and anyone can blow up! so satisfying
Also, you know what’s another great indicator what the “dominant” social media app is?

Which platform is being reposted from the most.

It used to be twitter, because IG would repost tweets all the time.

It’s TT now because tiktoks are being reposted EVERYWHERE.
