Guys, evangelicalism is so toxic that a young lady messaged my ministry page wondering if the medicine she’s taking in rehab to stay sober & clean off drugs is a sin. Do diabetics have to justify their insulin to anyone? No. & nor should they. 1/
I believe that God created some people with brilliant minds as a gift to the world for the medical discoveries they will make. As far as I’m concerned, my anti-depressants are just as much a miracle as the wine Jesus miraculously transformed from water.
2/
I’ve been healed by God’s power through prayer. I’ve been healed by medication. I thank God for both because I believe God is the original source of power for both.

I remember a story that I once heard during a sermon that really stuck with me.

3/
It wouldn’t surprise me a bit because I know people just like this.

There was a man who lived in an area directly in the path of a hurricane. They had already called for evacuation because flooding was almost guaranteed. When asked if he was evacuating, the man replied,

4/
“Nope, I’m not leaving. God said he would keep me safe.”

The rains fell & the winds howled. Eventually the water began to rise, as flooding was imminent. A neighbor was just leaving as they noticed the man’s under water beside his house. They stopped and said,
5/
“Come with us! The waters are rising! Your house will flood.”

Stubbornly & resolutely, the man said “Nope, I’m not leaving. God said he would keep me safe.”

The water continued to rise. When the water covered his first floor, he went to his second story. Someone in a boat
6/
Passed by his upstairs window.

They attempted to rescue the man. They said, “Man if you don’t come with us you’ll die!”

His reply remained the same. “Nope, I’m not leaving. God said he would keep me safe.”

As the waters rose further still, the man realized he needed
7/
To go higher still. He climbed out of the upstairs window and onto his roof.

In desperation the man through his arms into the air and yelled a final prayer, “God, you said you’d keep me safe, but I’m here on my roof, the winds are howling, and surely I’ll die!” It was then

8/
That the man distinctly heard the voice of Holy Spirit, “Son I sent your neighbors by to keep you safe, and a guy in a boat to rescue you. I’m about to send a helicopter so don’t be so super-spiritual that you miss the fact that I can use anything & anyone to be a miracle.”
9/
Five minutes later a helicopter came and rescued him at last. He thanked God after he made it up the ladder into the helicopter to safety.

We often fail to see God’s hand when people use their talents, gifts and resources to do God’s will.

We want God’s hand to move in

10/
Flashy, spooky, weird ways..... & often we miss the fact that God also moves in practical ways, like whispering in my heart to pay for someone’s groceries.

I fully believe that the medicines I’ve needed were a gift from God. I’m gonna need the church to catch up real quick. 11/
Also Pentecostals/charismatics. I’m lookin at y’all because we are so bad at making people feel like crap if they don’t get healed by prayer. 12/
