i wrote this thread in a fit of madness but i really am so fucking annoyed by the D&D treatment of gods, where they're mostly these weird moral arbiters with this opt-in scheme of worship, that's not how polytheism historically plays out https://twitter.com/jimpl7/status/1383842040325177346
you don't worship the god of the harvest because you like growth and preservation as a moral guidepost or because you're into the cottagecore aesthetic, you do it because if you don't please the god of the harvest you most likely aren't eating this year
it's like this weird capitalist watering down of gods, you go with whatever fits your personal identity and tastes and there's nothing besides raw appeal really compelling you in most cases- they're like fast food restaurants that give you magic powers
i'm not even saying you need these gods inextricably tied to natural forces who demand worship on pain of disaster, there's a GLOG thing that does this really well by only giving clerics & paladins power only when they're fulfilling the tenets of the divine domain- i like that
and don't even get me fucking started on fantasy monotheism
