So @kaminajsmith has found the courage to go public with harassment she has experienced from a senatorial colleague. I am heartened that we have reached the temporal and spatial comfort zone for her to now raise it now, a comfort zone @Delroychuckjm would tell her:
"If you don't complain within 12 months, please, cut it out." But we've arrived. And she has raised it. But now having raised it, the Senator places us in the "whodunnit" similar to the George Wright "whodidit" video. She has not stated if it's male or female. This then leaves
natural human instinct to believe male, and a cloud cast over them all. Additionally, no time period is mentioned. So could be any male or female Senator from the time she has been a Senator. The allegation is harassment. The next guesswork is whether it is sexual.
The utterance, without more, is unsatisfactory. The timing possibly questionable. But as a strong advocate on rights issues I care not about the timing or the alleged harasser being of my similar political persuasion. Indeed, I care little even for the motive of it being raised
now. It has. But as an attorney herself, I am sure the Senator understands the impact of her vague statement which hangs like the sword of Damocles over the entire body of Opposition Senators from the time of her entry in that Upper House. If this has been raised in order
to segue into Jamaica's own #MeToo , then let it be. But simply raising it may be construed as political and a deflection/counter to the George Wright debacle. Make no mistake, I'm not deflected. All I ask is that something so significant is not simply raised " by the way"
such that it does no more than politicise something as critical as any type of violence against women. If this is to be ventilated appropriately and adequately, the Senator needs to name the name, time, and reason for highlighting. If we are serious about our convictions and
intention to end violence against women, then those at the highest scale, like the Senator, should be forthright. If she's "afraid" to say who or when, then what do we expect of the "little people?" My simple view is that this is too critical to have been relayed so casually.
