To say the conditions in our jails are abhorrent would be an understatement. My heart broke hearing from detainees about inedible food, inconsistent meals, mold in their drinking water -- if their cells even have running water in the first place.

The facilities have not been well maintained. We saw firsthand how easily the locks can be manipulated. The floors, ceilings, vents, and even the medical facilities were not clean and sanitary.

COVID protocols are inadequate. Detainees get two masks per week, and hand sanitizer stations are few and far between. Requests for COVID tests sometimes take days. Some detainees say they were placed in cells and units with those who tested positive.

The list goes on and on.
Our detainees fear retaliation for speaking up. In both facilities we heard complaints about the use of bear mace, and some were still wearing the clothes they wore when they were sprayed.

This is happening to detainees who have been waiting for court dates -- some, for years.
I am committed to #ClosetheWorkhouse now more than ever.

At minimum, we owe our detainees clean and humane conditions while in our custody. We owe them fair and speedy trials as guaranteed by the Constitution.

We owe them dignity.
Thank you to all who have fought for so long to bring light to these conditions. I hear you, and I am committed to transforming this outdated, inefficient, and expensive system.
