I made a reference to Bazooka Joe over the phone.
The other person had NO idea what I was talking about.
I know I'm getting old, but...

You guys know who Bazooka Joe is, right?
Back in '93, I made a Bazooka Joe reference in a Ren & Stimpy comic and it felt dated even then. 😜

And we've reached the point where Ren & Stimpy are dated.

So I'm like Incepting over here.

Can I still make Inception jokes?

Oh God, is INCEPTION dated?!!

JFC, I'm spiraling!
Quick side story about writing licensed comics:

That specific issue of REN & STIMPY was a logistical nightmare.

On TV, there was a running joke about the boogers Stimpy picked from his nose and kept under his table. They were his "nose goblin" collection.

Well...
1/7
Nickelodeon WOULDN'T let us do nose goblin jokes in the comics because it was "too gross".

We complained it wasn't gross enough for TV.

And they said on TV it went by quickly, but in a comic, kids could stop & linger on it.

This was a LONG running argument we had with Nick.
2/
But then they put out nose goblin MERCH!

And we pointed out that in that case kids weren't just "lingering" on it, they were "PLAYING" with it.

After a solid year of arguing, they said we could show a grand total of ONE nose goblin in the comic.

Victory!

We clarified...
3/
Could we KEEP showing the SAME one nose goblin throughout the entire comic?

They acquiesced. We could.

So for REN & STIMPY #13 I wrote a story where one of Stimpy's inventions blasted ONE of his nose goblins and turned it into a 50 ft monster that was destroying the city.
4/
By the end of the story, they blasted it with nasal decongestant, it liquified, and flooded the city in snot. The End!

But not quite.

Even though they approved the plot, our licensor freaked out when they saw it drawn and demanded we change the entire story.

So...
5/
...the "nose goblin" was changed to a piece of GUM that was stuck under the table instead.

It was a 50 ft gum monster that attacked the city.

And we had to quickly come up with a completely different ending.

This is licensed comics, kids. :)
6/
I wrote Ren & Stimpy comics for two years.
And never, officially, wrote a nose goblin joke.
Because I couldn't.
But the issue still came out okay.
And I did have a fun time working on the property and working with the creative team.
So... it's all good.
