As a matter of policy, this is a bad bill, but I'm disturbed by how ableist some opponents are. I feel bad for Allison Tant's disabled child that she just told the world that disabled kids are expensive and the solution is for poor families to abort. https://floridapolitics.com/archives/423362-house-approves-bill-to-ban-disability-abortions-after-emotional-debate/
You don't fight a bill that Republicans introduced in bad faith by proving them right and being a eugenicist.
A society where people feel like they have no other choice than to abort a disabled child is a society that's broken, and it sure as hell isn't moral to argue that only disabled children in rich families who can pay for medical care have a right to be born.
When people are backed into a corner where they feel like they have no option but abortion, supporting that isn't being pro-choice. If it's a bounded choice where there isn't any other feasible financial option, it's not a choice at all.
You're not actually pro-choice if you're supporting a system where abortion is the only option.
Democrats had the opportunity here to pressure Florida Republicans to put their money where their mouth is and take the Medicaid expansion so that poor families can afford medical care for disabled kids. Instead, people like Allison Tant decided to be ableist eugenicists.
Which just goes to show why the FDP was such a complete disaster when Allison Tant was running it. An ableist classist who thinks only disabled kids in rich families deserve to be born is completely out of touch with this state's needs.
