Taking a break from COVID content for tonight’s Battle of the Butter Chicken

Follow along as me and my friends blind taste test 5 butter chicken options in St. John’s #butterchickenbattle
Before we begin all NL covid precautions are being followed. All four of us are in our close 20, one person is doing the serving #butterchickenbattle
The 5 options are SpiceX, India Gate, Pizza House, Shalamar, and PC frozen butter chicken. We won’t know which is which though! So we’ll taste them blind, rate them out of 5 #butterchickenbattle
Here’s option one. Friends say it’s a bit bland. Creamy but not a lot of tomato flavour. People are not thrilled #butterchickenbattle
The second option. The colour is more brown. It’s more flavourful. Cumin and coriander. More people said yes to the test question “would you invite this chicken back to your place” #butterchickenbattle
Here’s option number 3. It’s very sweet and tomatoy. But it has some spice. The room is divided. “It tastes like chicken in pizza sauce” #butterchickenbattle
Number four got photographed after I started serving. The butter chicken combo included veg. Scores based on butter chicken only. It’s sweet but smokey. It was truly buttery. Some love it some don’t #butterchickenbattle
And number 5, the last. It’s a little watery and the chicken is kind of rubbery but it has a nice smokiness. People think this might be the microwave version so it’s impeding their objectivity #butterchickenbattle
Ok so after a group meeting and lots of arguing we’ve come to consensus.
Going from lowest to highest
#5 is the PC butter chicken. It was too uniform. Like it was ok but uninspired. The chicken consistency was about rubbery #butterchickenbattle
The #4 was Indian Pizza House. Consensus was it was too sweet. You could select your spice level so the medium spice cut the sweetness a bit #butterchickenbattle
#3 is Shalimar. Everyone thought it was SpiceX and they were all wrong. It was mild. It’s what you’d serve your mom who wasn’t keen on Indian. Not bad but not great #butterchickenbattle
The runner up is India Gate. We ordered the Butter Chicken Combo it included veggies as well. It had good flavour. People liked the smoke #butterchickenbattle
And the winner is SpiceX! It’s also the cheapest of takeout options at 11.99. It also included rice and some Naan (but it was less butter chicken than some other options) #butterchickenbattle
