(1/5) Biking home between Friendship Heights and Tenleytown with my six year old from a friend's baby shower, on a two-lane road with no parking on either side. A driver behind us swerves INTO COMING TRAFFIC so that he can pull up beside us.
(2/5) He rolled down his window and screamed over his passenger at me, "YOU NEED TO CONTROL YOUR DAUGHTER. WHY ARE YOU BIKING IN THE STREET?" As a point of order I feel the need to note in writing that at this point we were doing nothing illegal, but he was.
(3/5) He then added, "THIS IS THE PROBLEM WITH ASIANS. YOU ARE THE PROBLEM." At that point I started screaming back at him. I'm not even sure what I said. I wish I'd gotten out my phone and recorded him instead. He drove off, barely avoiding a multicar collision. We biked home.
(4/5) I'm totally shaken. I want to live in a world where I can bike on neighborhood streets with my daughter and not be subject to vehicular terrorism or racism. The evidence from this week is ample that this isn't the world we live in.
(5/5) I've devoted my entire adult life to work to create that world. My heart is broken and my child is terrified.
