Alright, time for me to talk about "it". I.e. "the perfect storm." AKA the Batman: Urban Legends #5 solicitation.
There's so much to talk about this single solicitation. From dear lord thanks for spoiling some TWISTS that would have been better not said. See this is why I hate freaking solicitations because they spoil unnecessarily, like Jason's story.
But let's talk about Batgirls, i.e. their story in this. This is the manifestation of the "perfect storm". Elements that have been sprinkled out throughout this year (and last) that have caused this outrage many have over it.
Ever since last September in Batman: Joker War Zone #1, the "Batgirls" hype train began. The slate was being set for this too. With Batgirl ending, well a new female Bat comic needs to fill that void. This would be perfect.
Instead, nothing.

0 female solo ongoing/mini's Bat-books since October. No Barbara or Kate even. Meanwhile, Selina and Harley, the anti-heroes get their respective solo comics along with so many minis and maxis series it's hard to keep up at this point.
We do have a Huntress back-up that starts this month in Tec sooo-- semi-progress there? But there's an obvious void in readers that DC is leaving bare. And they're starting to show their voice.

So why is there no Batgirls ongoing? Quite possibly several factors.
#1 They don't trust the two as leads. I know this is kind of baffling but I guarantee you this is a reason, and this is all on DC and WB themselves if this is the case.
Them hedging their money so much on Barbara as Batgirl has led to this. Not allowing other legacy characters to thrive outside in media has caused this, not readers.
That sort of mindset is absolutely crazy, considering they had a character (Cass) who starred in a solo Batgirl comic for seventy+ issues.

If that's the logic then that's on DC for neglecting the character this badly.
But there is a need for a female Bat book. Look at the retweets and likes whenever someone asks about it? There is an interest. There is a flicker that can be flamed into something greater.
#2 Our own meta wants for the book. Look we did have the FS Batgirls. And what did it have? A very vocal Cass and an edgy Steph. So we tore it to pieces. Though, I think rightfully so.
You really don't think your voices matter, but they do. DC heard us ridicule the edge so they went the opposite. A bubbly cute Batgirls story hence the solicitation.
And now they're hearing us tear that idea to shreds. So they're like, "What do you want?!"

Well, the answer is-- it isn't the ideas per se. The ideas are fine. It's the execution.
I'm a simple reader, with a simple need for the Big 2. I want these characters written IN character. If you're going to do something OOC with them you better at least explain it. That's something FS Batgirls only did "slightly" with Steph. "Slightly" and it still feels absurd.
I know there are writers who adore these characters, but I also know we as fans just take things always to the EXTREME!! Just thankfully not 90s extreme.

I'm still willing to have an open mind of the story even if the "blurb" feels absurd.
But on the other hand, this is probably Steph letting Cass in on things you do at this age. Something she is all, "?????" at.

It's something Steph realizes that someone should have in their life if they haven't. Like a certain demonic Robin.
So I do find it in character that Steph would try to get Cass to attempt something normal. I just realized that Bruce is playing it closer by ear living in the city now. So Wayne Manor is closed up.
But that's all we know. I'm for the art with what I've seen of it so far by Sweeney Boo. She seems a perfect mixture of both Batgirls.
As for the writer? Marguerite Bennett, I don't know what really to expect. I enjoyed her DC Bombshells even if her Cass and Steph) were-- there and nothing more.

I still want my dang variant Black Bat Bombshell cover dangnabbit.
Then there's the history you add with the characters. These two have been through A LOT. Yeah, thanks DC for that. So again to get a story in an anthology feels like the runner-up prize here if that's all we're getting with the two as Batgirls.
And that leads me to my #3. This is the sins of the past rearing their heads and well, this is the reaping of what you've sowed DC.

You've neglected these characters. Cast them off and kicked them to the curb. You've beaten this fanbase as much as these characters.
You can only take so much. Here's the factor you just keep underestimating. The fans are still here. You've tossed both these wonderful characters to the curb, yet here we are. We're still here. We want our characters in these roles again.
DC you left this void open yourself and right now there is a hunger. A need. You didn't patch it up. That need is..

A
BATGIRLS
ONGOING.
This one of MANY patchworks that you kind of need. So I fully understand the why given how many holes there are in the "ship".

But this is a big hole. A giant hole. That really needs the patchwork done or else you're leaving readers adrift.
And you want money right DC? You know how much I'm going to give you next month on a certain special alone? Freaking $40. That's just me. Who knows how many other readers will buy the heck out of that special next month. Don't you like money? That's just the special.
Like, it just baffles me that the company is playing everything so "safe" and not take the one good chance it's got at an ongoing Bat book right now.

You put a writer and artist that are in sync with one another?
Don't detract from their vision? You promote it? That stuff will sell. It's just so vexing how this continues to occur with these two characters and this company. How they have this mindset and yet here are these two characters still existing. Not in limbo. Their fans vocal.
But you're really being a bastard still. Almost as if a certain former co-publisher is still there. Cause you want to know WHY we're acting like this? Um... yeah I've got the receipts of the emotional pain and anguish from '06 to '07 to '9 to '11 to '11 to '15!!!
But... I get it. I really do on the right frequency to get us to positively talk about the book. We're like Goldilocks and they're the three bears. This Batgirls story is too edgy. This Batgirls story is too light. Where's the Batgirls story just right?
The answer is sort of why Babs' ongoings shot down. The creatives kept going in either direction and well, the books suffered. DC just has to stick in one direction and go with it with the pair. BUT... Cass/Steph have stories that could go anywhere.
Hence why I'm game for this story. As long as, you know...
And when that Batgirls ongoing happens well...
