[A thread]
Metal Gear RAY:
This time the titular Metal Gear is a tutorial boss fight. A thrilling start, I love how you can parry almost every attack it has in order to deal massive damage. A good risk and reward system.
After this part, RAY will have another phase that is on the side of a
building, where you mostly hit it while it shoots missiles at you. Good for blade mode tutorialization but this part is kind of a bore compared to the previous part.
Then some QTEs play and you run down a clocktower (Bayonetta reference) and finally end RAY. Thrilling start.
Jetstream Sam 1:
Technically not a boss fight but I'll include it anyway. This confrontation plays out in a way that guarantees you lose, a lot like Vile from Megaman X. It serves it's purpose in the story, good troll boss.
Blade Wolf:
Annoying if you don't know how to parry at this point, otherwise this is an easy battle that also has normal enemy interference for health pick ups. I don't really have much to say about Blade Wolf, it's very normal compared to the other bosses.
Mistral:
This battle is really easy but being easy doesn't equal being bad. Mistral has a lot of Dwarf Gekkos that provide health pick ups upon defeat, and her attacks aren't exactly that devastating. Nevertheless, the music, A Stranger I Remain, is one of my favorites.
The spectacle of fighting in a power plant is really cool, and using ice to freeze Mistral for her execution is a nice and unique takedown method.
Monsoon:
The lyrics in his song make me hysterical for some reason, a guy screaming his head off about the rain. The battle itself is pretty good, parrying Monsoon so you can actually hit him, and he also throws stuff at you for you to cut. Although I wish that stuff could be-
more incorporated in damaging the boss, like say throwing the objects back for damage instead of just cutting them and letting that be it. The final part has some QTEs and Monsoon is executed. An alright boss fight.
Sundowner:
Despite the hype of making it to fighting Sundowner, he's not even that difficult, and unlike Mistral the easiness of this fight doesn't make it fun. He mostly pulls out his explosive shields that you need to cut with blade mode, and he also has a super easy AI exploit
Otherwise the battle is still visually thrilling, and the execution is really funny since Sundowner flies out of an exploding Helicopter and is cut to pieces.
Jetstream Sam 2:
The rematch with Sam, and it's without a doubt the best fight in the game. The tension, the music, the mano y mano sword fight with no extra gimmicks is reminiscent of Snake vs Gray Fox. No crazy object throwing, just two swords clashing at it.
However I will say that Sam feels like a brick wall of a difficulty spike compared to what you had to fight before. If you aren't prepared, this will probably be the part where you lower the difficulty. He has so many unorthodox tricks that aren't used by many enemies in the game
which works well given his character role, however I think the game should have at least made some of it's mechanics more clear before fighting him. Otherwise, this is the peak of the MGR boss fights.
Metal Gear EXCELSUS:
I sometimes forget this is in the game. It's slow and lumbering movement makes reading it's attacks simply too easy and it doesn't help it's sandwiched between Sam and Armstrong. A very forgettable battle.
Senator Armstrong:
The guy who says "Nanomachines, son!" The final boss has a few phases, the first ones mostly being an unwinnable battle similar to Jetstream Sam 1. It has the same effect except this time in context of being the same singular battle.
The real fight begins-
on the final phase of the fight, where you take Sam's blade and have to destroy Armstrong once and for all. The part of the battle involves precise blade mode cuts on Armstrong which feels rewarding. He also throws stuff at you and attacks you with multiple QTEs throughout the
match. This fight is pretty hard which is good since it's the final boss, I do think it goes on for longer than it should by just a bit but otherwise it's a good conclusion to this hectic action game.
Boss fights ranked from best to worst:
Jetstream Sam
Senator Armstrong
Mistral
Monsoon
Metal Gear RAY
Sundowner
Blade Wolf
