Anyone notice how much of contemporary SFF's prose style is similar to bad social media posts? Flat prose, or awkward attempts to sound chatty, or that corny Epic Bacon humor. To echo Truman Capote, it's not writing--it's posting.
When you post that way, as corny as it is, you're likely to get a lot of instant attention, instant serotonin boosts: likes, comments, reblogs. It's meant for quick and easy engagement, but it's not meant for depth or endurance--a popular post still gets forgotten pretty fast.
But it really doesn't interest me. Posts are content--not really something to be taken seriously, not something to think about real hard. When I read fiction, I don't want content--I want art.
I don't care if a story has a cool plot. If the prose is no good, I'm not interested in sticking around for the plot.
Not to mention--posts are usually short! Like 280 characters! A long Reddit post might be a couple hundred words. That's the maximum length that writing style is tolerable. I can't take 5000 words of that!
