This is incredibly validating. My daughter has grown out of her allergy, but sending a 9 month old blowing up like a blue balloon in an ambulance is something I’d never wish on another parent. https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/biden-signs-new-law-that-makes-sesame-the-ninth-major-food-allergen/">https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-wo...
Managing a sesame allergy for a toddler is super scary. No one knows tahini is made of sesame, and no one knows tahini is the main ingredient in hummus. In Seattle there isn’t a daycare classroom or kid party where hummus isn’t featured prominently.
Simply having the words “contains: sesame” on a food label will go a long way toward building awareness. My daughter grew out of her allergy but there are over 1M people in the U.S. who haven’t been that lucky.
Anyway I hope Ellyn Satter and her publisher @BullPub have updated their guidance that led us to feed our baby a huge dose of tahini at 9 months, not knowing it was a top allergen. They never responded to my emails urging them to update their book Child of Mine.
